அமைதி மற்றும் நல்லிணக்கத்துக்கான மகாத்மா காந்தி சர்வதேச விருது தென் ஆப்ரிக்கா தலைவர் நெல்சன் மண்டேலாவுக்கு வழங்கப்பட்டுள்ளது.
தென்னாப்பிரிக்கா டர்பனில் உள்ளது மகாத்மா காந்தி அறக்கட்டளை மற்றும் சத்யாகிரக அமைப்பு. கடந்த 2003ம் ஆண்டில் இருந்து இந்த அறக்கட்டளை செயல்பட்டு வருகிறது.
இந்த அமைப்பு, அமைதி மற்றும் நல்லிணக்கத்துக்கான மகாத்மா காந்தி சர்வதேச விருதை நெல்சன் மண்டேலாவுக்கு வழங்கியுள்ளது. தியாகத்தாலும் பங்களிப்பாலும் உலக மக்களின் மனதில் இடம் பிடித்தார் என்று பாராட்டப்பட்டு அவர் கௌரவிக்கப்பட்டார்.
நேற்று நடந்த விருது வழங்கும் விழாவில் மண்டேலா கலந்து கொள்ளவில்லை. விருதை அவருக்கு பதிலாக அவரது சிறைத் தோழரும் அரசியல் ஆலோசகருமான அகமது கத்ராடா பெற்றுக் கொண்டார்.

A love affair with plastic
Shoppers worldwide are using 500 billion to 1 trillion plastic bags per year.[1] This translates to about a million bags every minute across the globe, or 150 bags a year for every person on earth. And the number is rising.[2]
Californians use 27.5 billion plastic bags each year – enough to circle the earth over 348 times.[3] This is equivalent to about 766 disposable plastic bags per person per year.)
Americans used 2.4 million tons of LDPE (low-density polyethylene) for bags, sacks, and wraps in 2000. Only 4.3% of this material was recovered after use, according to the US EPA. In the United States, 96% of groceries use plastic bags and 7% offer only plastic.[4] Fewer than 5 percent of US shoppers use canvas, cotton, or mesh bags.[5]
What does it matter?
Plastic items of all kinds present a significant and costly form of litter, pollution, and waste. Plastic litter on California streets, beaches, and parkways is more than just an aesthetic blight. Eventually most non-degradable plastic litter will find its way into the storm drain system and into the marine environment. Even plastic that gets “thrown away” does not always make it to the landfill, but rather gets diverted by wind or improper handling.
Why pick on plastic bags?Single-use bags use up natural resources and energy. Plastic bags are made from polyethylene. Polyethylene comes from petroleum, a nonrenewable resource. When one ton of plastic bags are reused or recycled, the energy saved is equal to 11 barrels of oil. An estimated 3 million barrels of oil are required to produce the 27.5 billion plastic bags used annually in California. Only a few plastic carry-out bags use recycled content; most of those contain only around 5% recycled material.
Plastic bags are indestructible. Plastic bags take between 20 and 1000 years to break down in the environment. Even when they do break down they are not really gone. Plastic bags do not bio-degrade. They simply break apart into ever smaller pieces, eventually forming “plastic dust.” No matter how large or small they are, plastic bits are not digestible by any creature on land, in the air, or under the sea. We are literally choking the planet with products which cannot re-enter the life cycle.
Plastic bags and packaging are killing marine life. More than 1 million birds, more than 100,000 whales, seals and turtles, and countless fish worldwide are killed by plastic rubbish every year. These deaths occur through entanglement, suffocation, and starvation by ingestion. A Minke whale found on a beach in Normandy in April of 2002 had approximately 2 pounds of plastic bags and packaging in its digestive tract.
Plastic is getting into the food chain. Even the finest particles of plastic represent a threat to creatures at the lowest level of the food chain in the marine environment, the filter-feeders. Then, toxins in filter-feeders are passed up the food chain to fish and other marine animals, which humans then consume.
Plastic is over-running our planet. Estimates run as high as one million pieces of plastic per square kilometer (0.6 mile) floating in specific areas of the Pacific Ocean. In this area, plastics outnumber plankton, the base of the marine food web.[6] [7] A surface trawl of the ocean found 6 pounds of plastic pieces for every pound of zooplankton.
But plastic bags are so convenient!
It depends on how far you are looking. A plastic bag may be convenient for a minute or two when you carry something out of the store, but for the rest of the life of the bag (which is forever) it is not just inconvenient, it is ugly, toxic, and life-threatening. There are alternatives to plastic bags, many of which were used by our parents...

திருப்பதியில் தோழி வீட்டுக்கு வந்த இடத்தில் நடிகை ஷில்பா ஷெட்டியை தோழி வீட்டு நாய் கடித்து விட்டதாம்.கடந்த சில நாட்களாகவே தொடர் துன்பத்தில் உழன்று வருகிறார் ஷில்பா. சமீபத்தில் துபாய் சென்றிருந்தார் ஷில்பா. அங்கு அவருக்கு கடும் சளி, இருமல், நெஞ்செரிச்சல் வந்து படாதபாடுபட்டுள்ளார்.அது போதாதென்று அதற்கு முன்பு ஒரு நாயிடம் சிக்கி மீண்டுள்ளாராம் ஷில்பா.

'ரேபிஸ் எதிர்ப்பு ஊசி' எதையும் போட்டுக்கொள்ள வேண்டாம் என டாக்டர் என்னை அறிவுறுத்தினார். அதற்குப் பதிலாக 'ஆன்டி பயாட்டிக்' மருந்துகளை எடுத்துக்கொள்ளுமாறு கூறியுள்ளார்.நாய்க்கடி ஒன்றும் அவ்வளவு மோசமாக இல்லை. அதனுடைய விரல் நகங்கள், எனது ஒரு காலைப் பதம் பார்த்து விட்டது. இதனால் அந்த இடம் வீங்கி விட்டது.அது யாரையும் கடித்ததில்லையாம். ஆனால் அதன் உடம்பில் ஏற்பட்ட ஹார்மோன் கோளாறால் இப்படி செய்து விட்டதாக கூறினர்.நாய்க்கடிக்கும், சளிக்கும் தனித்தனியாக இரு 'ஆன்டி பயாட்டிக்' மருந்துகளை நான் தற்போது எடுத்து வருகிறேன்.

இந்த மருந்துகள் மிகவும் வலிமையானவை என்பதால் வயிற்றில் வலியை ஏற்படுத்தி விட்டது. இதனால் நான் மிகவும் சோர்வடைந்துள்ளேன்.இதன் காரணமாக மீண்டும் துபாய் சென்றுவிட்டு புதன்கிழமை ஊர் திரும்பியபோது விமான நிலையத்திலிருந்து என்னால் கார் வரைக்கும் நடந்து கூட வர முடியவில்லை. இதையடுத்து வீல்சேரில் என்னை அழைத்து வந்தனர். வீல் சேரில் அழைத்து வந்தது என்னை மிகுந்த மன உளைச்சலுக்கு ஆளாக்கி விட்டது.இந்த சூழ்நிலை காரணமாக துபாயில் எனது பிறந்த நாளைக் கூட நான் கொண்டாட முடியவில்லை.

நடிகர் கமல்ஹாசன் 10 வேடங்களில் நடித்துள்ள 'தசாவதாரம்' வரும் (ஜூன்) 13-ம் தேதி வெளியாகவிருப்பது ரசிகர்களுக்கு மகிழ்ச்சியை அளித்தாலும், இதில் நடித்துள்ள அசின், இந்தப் படத்துடன் கோலிவுட்டிற்கு 'டாட்டா' காட்டி விட்டு பாலிவுட்டில் அழுத்தமாக கால்பதிக்க உள்ளார் என்ற செய்தி தமிழ் ரசிகர்களுக்கு நிச்சயம் வருத்தமளிக்கும்.

அசின் பின்னணி: மலையாளப் படத்தில் அசின் அறிமுகமானாலும், வந்தாரை வாழ வைக்கும் தமிழ்த் திரையுலகம் அவரையும் அரவணைத்துக் கொண்டது.

It's a necessary step to success – and a blessing in disguise.

Power of Positive Talk

I remember my dad teaching me the power of language at a very young age. Not only did my dad understand that specific words affect our mental pictures, but he understood words are a powerful programming factor in lifelong success. One particularly interesting event occurred when I was eight. As a kid, I was always climbing trees, poles, and literally hanging around upside down from the rafters of our lake house. So, it came to no surprise for my dad to find me at the top of a 30-foot tree swinging back and forth. My little eight-year-old brain didn't realize the tree could break or I could get hurt. I just thought it was fun to be up so high. My older cousin, Tammy, was also in the same tree. She was hanging on the first big limb, about ten feet below me. Tammy's mother also noticed us at the exact time my dad did. About that time a huge gust of wind came over the tree. I could hear the leaves start to rattle and the tree begin to sway. I remember my dad's voice over the wind yell, "Bart, Hold on tightly." So I did. The next thing I know, I heard Tammy screaming at the top of her lungs, laying flat on the ground. She had fallen out of the tree. I scampered down the tree to safety. My dad later told me why she fell and I did not. Apparently, when Tammy's mother felt the gust of wind, she yelled out, "Tammy, don't fall!" And Tammy did fall. My dad then explained to me that the mind has a very difficult time processing a negative image. In fact, people who rely on internal pictures cannot see a negative at all. In order for Tammy to process the command of not falling, her nine-year-old brain had to first imagine falling, then try to tell the brain not to do what it just imagined. Whereas, my eight-year-old brain instantly had an internal image of me hanging on tightly. This concept is especially useful when you are attempting to break a habit or set a goal. You can't visualize not doing something. The only way to properly visualize not doing something is to actually find a word for what you want to do and visualize that. For example, when I was thirteen years old, I played for my junior high school football team. I tried so hard to be good, but I just couldn't get it together at that age. I remember hearing the words run through my head as I was running out for a pass, "Don't drop it!" Naturally, I dropped the ball. My coaches were not skilled enough to teach us proper "self-talk." They just thought some kids could catch and others couldn't. I'll never make it pro, but I'm now a pretty good Sunday afternoon football player, because all my internal dialogue is positive and encourages me to win. I wish my dad had coached me playing football instead of just climbing trees. I might have had a longer football career. Here is a very easy demonstration to teach your kids and your friends the power of a toxic vocabulary. Ask them to hold a pen or pencil. Hand it to them. Now, follow my instructions carefully. Say to them, "Okay, try to drop the pencil." Observe what they do. Most people release their hands and watch the pencil hit the floor. You respond, "You weren't paying attention. I said TRY to drop the pencil. Now please do it again." Most people then pick up the pencil and pretend to be in excruciating pain while their hand tries but fails to drop the pencil. The point is made. If you tell your brain you will "give it a try," you are actually telling your brain to fail. I have a "no try" rule in my house and with everyone I interact with. Either people will do it or they won't. Either they will be at the party or they won't.. I'm brutal when people attempt to lie to me by using the word try. Do they think I don't know they are really telegraphing to the world they have no intention of doing it but they want me to give them brownie points for pretended effort? You will never hear the words "I'll try" come out of my mouth unless I'm teaching this concept in a seminar. If you "try" and do something, your unconscious mind has permission not to succeed. If I truly can't make a decision I will tell the truth. "Sorry John. I'm not sure if I will be at your party or not. I've got an outstanding commitment. If that falls through, I will be here. Otherwise, I will not. Thanks for the invite." People respect honesty. So remove the word "try" from your vocabulary. My dad also told me that psychologists claim it takes seventeen positive statements to offset one negative statement.. I have no idea if it is true, but the logic holds true. It might take up to seventeen compliments to offset the emotional damage of one harsh criticism. These are concepts that are especially useful when raising children. Ask yourself how many compliments you give yourself daily versus how many criticisms. Heck, I know you are talking to yourself all day long. We all have internal voices that give us direction. So, are you giving yourself the 17:1 ratio or are you shortchanging yourself with toxic self-talk like, " I'm fat. Nobody will like me. I'll try this diet. I'm not good enough.. I'm so stupid. I'm broke, etc. etc." If our parents can set a lifetime of programming with one wrong statement, imagine the kind of programming you are doing on a daily basis with your own internal dialogue. Here is a list of Toxic Vocabulary words. Notice when you or other people use them. But: Negates any words that are stated before it. Try: Presupposes failure. If: Presupposes that you may not. Might: It does nothing definite. It leaves options for your listener. Would Have: Past tense that draws attention to things that didn't actually happen. Should Have: Past tense that draws attention to things that didn't actually happen (and implies guilt.) Could Have: Past tense that draws attention to things that didn't actually happen but the person tries to take credit as if it did happen. Can't/Don't: These words force the listener to focus on exactly the opposite of what you want. This is a classic mistake that parents and coaches make without knowing the damage of this linguistic error. Examples: Toxic phrase: "Don't drop the ball!" Likely result: Drops the ball Better language: "Catch the ball!" Toxic phrase: "You shouldn't watch so much television." Likely result: Watches more television. Better language: "I read too much television makes people stupid. You might find yourself turning that TV off and picking up one of those books more often!" Exercise: Take a moment to write down all the phrases you use on a daily basis or any Toxic self-talk that you have noticed yourself using. Write these phrases down so you will begin to catch yourself as they occur and change them.
